The “impossible figures” play with the laws of perspective in order to deceive the eye and make us mentally construct objects that cannot exist in reality.

In this animation, a confused bipedal animal walks down a stairway that seemingly descends to infinity.

You can click and drag with the mouse to change the point of view and reveal the trick.

Note that the cute little beast gradually changes its size in order to compensate for the perspective reduction that would reveal the trick. 

The model was represented by the Dutch artist M. C. Escher in a famous lithograph “Ascending and descending” (1960).
